Thanet Big Sing Community Choir have a variety of performances throughout the year at selected venues, and here are a few confirmed dates.
Saturday 28th March 2020
Arranged and conducted by our Music Director, Tony Castro, the Thanet Big Sing Community Choir will perform WE WILL SING at 12pm and 2pm on Saturday 28th March in the Foyle Room at Turner Contemporary.
Turner Contemporary is hosting We Will Walk – Art and Resistance in the American South, which is the first exhibition of its kind in the UK. It opens on 7th February 2020 and reveals a little-known history shaped by the Civil Rights period in the 1950s and 60s.
It will bring together sculptural assemblages, paintings and quilts by more than 20 African American artists from Alabama and surrounding states. The artists represented in the exhibition lived through the Civil Rights struggle and its aftermath, often in conditions of poverty. The exhibition also features Civil Rights music and documentary photographs that reveal the links between the art and its context.
WE WILL SING is the Thanet Big Sing Community Choir response to this exhibition and is a curated, complementary collection of protest songs all in some way “Made in England”
WE WILL SING gives voice to the plight of ‘We, the people’ in the face of adversity. The concert includes songs protesting land rights, the Corn Laws, Womens’ rights, the Kentish Miners’ strike, civil rights, and inequality.
